Not much is generally known about the artist, Bill Olive, who did a handful of other notable psychedelic posters during this period, other than he was an English artist, who had come to work for Earl Newman posters in Los Angeles, arriving in January 1968. He was killed in a West Oakland crack house after a dispute with a drug dealer on August 22, 1989. Newton was charged with two murders, although he was never convicted he was also tried for embezzlement. After Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in April 1968, some of the black community questioned the strategy of non violent resistance and political agitation, favouring rhetoric and programmes that promoted African American separatism as well as the use of violence to obtain it. Initially the Panthers were a community and grassroots organization seeking to break the cycle of poverty, drug abuse, and crime in the Bay Area they became famous for organizing free breakfasts for schoolchildren.
